QDAD - Aug 19th

Well, I only have one to share this week and that is all my middle daughter's fault. I know, but really, hear me out!

She wanted to try loom knitting. So, well yea I had to try it too. I mean I had to be a good mom and go through this experience with her, right? So self sacrificing! lol In any case I spent about 3 whole days loom knitting a frickin scarf for my eldest daughter.

I think I am hooked. Heehee, hooked! Get it? See what I did there? *eye roll* Ok, moving on.

Anyway the inspiration I used this week was a flamingo. I love the colors in this photo.  Flamingos are so pretty! I am a bird fan and a bigger fan of big birds, they are just so amazing! I love that occasionally I get to see a flock of these in wild here, out by Cape Canaveral. They are so awesome.

I went with the whole abstract thing again as I really liked how funky the last quilt top turned out. So, I designed an abstract flamingo block. Again, I am not the fondest of the block alone but once you get a bunch together and do some rotating, I am a huge fan! I love how this top turned out!

I am thinking I might need to turn this one in to an actual block. If I do, I will certainly share the measurements and tut for putting it together. Now, I am off to do something other than loom knit for a change lol.

QDAD - Aug 12th

I have two more designs to share with you from the Quilt Design a Day group. I know the whole idea is to do one or two a day and spend a few minutes being creative every day, but honestly I spend lots of time every day being creative so I just do some when the mood strikes me.

This inspiration was from July 11th:

I am not sure why but I wanted to try and abstract bird block. No real definition, just using clunky shapes to kind of simulate where different things in the picture were. I came up with this block:

I ended up switching where the green and the dark brown were from the photo as it just didn't sit right in that position, to me. I like the layout better this way. Now, I did think this was a rather simple design, but I put it into a whole quilt and played with orientation and I think I actually really like the way the over all quilt looks much more than a single block.

This is a seriously different design for me so it was actually good to try the abstract thing as it made me step out of my comfort zone.

The other design I did was from July 14th:

This photo is just stunning and I love the color palette.

I went a bit more literal with this one. I really love the way it turned out. I did not design it by the block but rather by the quilt as a whole. If this were to be worked up in to an actual quilt it would need some tinkering to get everything on a more even keel. I do love it though and just might have to consider doing that!

That's all for this week! Enjoy your day!

QDAD - Aug 5th

I am sure by now you have heard of the Quilt Design a Day group? If not there are some fun interviews over on the Sew Mama Sew blog from last month. Also if you want to read from Anne why she started it just check out this post on her blog. If you want to join there is a FB group where we all share things here.

So basically, the concept is just a little something every day to keep your creative juices flowing. Every day, Design Seeds puts out two color palettes along with the photo the colors come from. We take the color palettes and photo and use those as inspiration to design a quilt.

I do not play along every day and some days I hate what I make lol. BUT... I keep trying because things pop up that I like a lot as well! So I will dedicate Tuesdays to share a few of the ones I like. Who knows, maybe something will turn into a pattern or a quilt block that I can share as well. I just enjoy the creative process. If you do too, you should come join us!

These two were from July 4th.

I definitely love these colors but I was a bit lost on the inspiration pic so my quilt has nothing to do with this photo lol I have had a triangle quilt on the brain though as I so want to do another one and I thought that this would make a really pretty one!

This second palette is not something I would normally have gone with but I decided to go for it and just try something out of the box. I mean, isn't that what creativity is all about anyway? I amso glad I did as well as I really love what I ended up with!

I did love the inspiration of the picture here as well! This is totally doable and would be great as improv on muslin for foundation piecing. I am definitely keeping this one in mind!

Ok, that is all for now--but I will be back next week to share some more. I am loving the little boost it is giving me creatively... especially after a summer of not sewing anything!
