"Paper Pieced" Quilt

Ok... soooo. I found a quilt pattern I loved and after reading the tutorial on it, I thought I maybe could even do it! :) So right, here we go! lol

I found this quilt tutorial on While they Snooze This is paper pieced by strips ... I think this may be called a string block? Or is that only when you use smaller strips of fabric? I have no idea. Anyway, she was fumbling her way around to figure it out and I did the same and guess what? We both succeeded! Yay!

I made a lap quilt for my friend Erika, in North Carolina. I took Sarah's advice and stuck with the same strip for all my blocks in the middle... that way I could easily see a diamond pattern forming in the quilt. The rest of the strips were haphazardly placed.

The only thing I did different with the piecing is that I used all 2"cuts of fabric and instead of sewing onto paper, I sewed onto muslin. It was super cheap but I did not need to worry about ripping it off and the muslin, though thin, did give a little extra weight to the quilt in the end, which I liked.

I also tried a whole new method of binding, which I will share with you soon, but it is now the ONLY method I will use!

Here is a look at the quilt. I really was proud of how this turned out. I am finally starting to branch off into designs a little farther!

I was shocked at how quickly these blocks came together and I am in love! I can feel a few more of these coming on eventually! What do you think? Good for my first try with pseudo paper piecing? Thanks for looking and commenting and just being awesome! :)

***Oh and btw did you see I am at over 700 followers! Holy schnikees batman, that is amazing! If by some miracle I get to 1000k we are going have a big ole give-a-way I think. There may be a smaller one coming up soon though, so stay tuned!

  2. Awesome! It looks so good. And I really like the idea of muslin. It probably makes the quilt feel nicer/heavier. I think I'll try that next time. Thanks so much for the link back! It looks really good!!!
